Narberth Ambulance Prioritizes Workforce Wellness with The GUIDE App
Narberth Ambulance Company (Narberth Ambulance) is joining a growing list of public safety agencies partnering with The GUIDE App, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs award-winning mobile app dedicated to improving the lives of first responders and veterans. The 150 full-time and volunteer EMS workers of Narberth Ambulance will have the opportunity to invest in their own wellness through the evidence-based resources of The GUIDE App, which studies have shown reduce the anxiety of regular users by 29 percent.
The GUIDE App is revolutionizing the delivery of emotional and mental wellness care to first responders and veterans by providing immediate, confidential access to mental health resources directly through their mobile devices. The unique approach of The GUIDE App is reducing barriers like stigma and lack of access that often prevent these groups from receiving the wellness support they deserve.
“Our selfless EMS personnel are so focused on the wellbeing of others that they often neglect their own emotional and mental health,” said Chief John Mick of Narberth Ambulance. “They are required to show up to every call with the mental and physical toughness necessary to save lives, which can understandably take a toll on the mind and body. We are proud to partner with The GUIDE App to empower our first responders to take charge of their wellness on their own terms and support them in leading happier, healthier lives.”
With user privacy as a top priority, The GUIDE App was built through a collaborative effort with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (through the Mission Daybreak Accelerator) and leading wellness coordinators in the first responder community.
A time investment of just 15 minutes a day using the resources on the app can empower users to build resilience and improve overall life satisfaction. Innovative tools found in the app include anonymous, small group chats moderated by mental health professionals; customized, daily wellness practices like journaling and meditation; and one-to-two-minute courses ranging from how to create a budget to improving communication with family members.
“EMS professionals deal with tremendous stress and pressure on a daily basis as their decisive actions and expertise often make difference between life and death in emergency situations,” added Patrick Sandone, founder and CEO of The GUIDE App. “The GUIDE App is designed specifically to support the mental and emotional wellbeing of those who work on the frontlines of public safety. By creating a secure and anonymous space for sharing and growth, along with practical tools, The GUIDE App aims to help users be the best version of themselves.”
The platform has demonstrated success and thousands of active current members. A pilot study of the app showed high participant engagement with 75 percent completing at least one lesson per week and 59 percent participating in a small group chat at least once a week. Consistent use led to increased positive emotions; motivation and engagement; and decreased anxiety, negative emotions and loneliness.
The anticipated benefits of this partnership include increased morale, enhanced resiliency and improved retention rates, contributing to a healthier, more effective EMS workforce.
