Fueling Our Heroes: Webinar May 6, 2026

In the world of first responders, “fitness” is often measured by what you can do on the job. But what if the secret to your next decade of service isn’t found in the gym, but on your plate?

On May 6th, as part of our Mission Fuel Focus, the GUIDE App was honored to host a transformative webinar: “Fueling Our Heroes.” Our guest was none other than Kelly Richards, a powerhouse in the world of wellness and a veteran voice for those who serve.

If you missed the live session, here is a breakdown of why Kelly’s approach is a game-changer for the front line.

A Peer Who Practices What She Preaches

Kelly isn’t just a nutritionist or a coach; she’s a peer. With 18 years at the New Castle County Police Department, she has walked the beat, felt the weight of the vest, and lived the erratic schedule of a first responder.

As the founder and CEO of Adaptive Warriors, Kelly has bridged the gap between elite athletic performance and tactical longevity. Her credentials speak for themselves:

  • FBI Comprehensive Officer Resiliency Instructor
  • Trauma Support Specialist (Arizona Trauma Institute)
  • Undefeated NPC Physique Athlete (2015–2018)
  • First Responders National Grand Prix Overall Champion

When Kelly speaks about resilience, she isn’t quoting a textbook; she’s sharing a survival strategy she built through years of service and national-level athletic competition.

Nutrition as a Tactical Tool

During the webinar, Kelly challenged the “gas station diet” culture prevalent in police stations and firehouses. Her philosophy is simple: You cannot expect elite performance from your body if you fuel it with low-grade energy.

She highlighted that for first responders, nutrition isn’t about “looking good” for a bodybuilding stage (though she’s done that, too). It’s about Clinical Mental Health Nutrition. What you eat dictates:

  1. Your reaction time on a high-speed call.
  2. Your emotional regulation when dealing with a difficult subject.
  3. Your ability to sleep after a traumatic shift.

“We train our responders to shoot, to drive, and to fight. But we often forget to train them on how to fuel the engine that makes those skills possible.” – Kelly Richards

The Adaptive Warrior Mindset

One of the most impactful parts of the session was Kelly’s focus on Trauma Recovery. As a Trauma Support Specialist, she understands that the body stores the stress of the job. Nutrition and fitness are “Decon” (decontamination) tools. They help flush cortisol, reduce systemic inflammation, and reset the nervous system.

Whether she is coaching NCAA Division II athletes at Wilmington University or training officers across the country, Kelly’s mission remains the same: helping you become the best version of yourself so you can help others.

Start Your Mission Fuel Journey Today

The “Fueling Our Heroes” webinar reminded us that sustainable readiness is a choice we make every time we sit down to eat.

3 Tactical Tips from the Session:

  1. Hydrate for the Brain: Dehydration mimics brain fog and fatigue. Drink for your mind, not just your muscles.
  2. Prioritize Protein: It’s the building block of neurotransmitters that keep your mood stable.
  3. Micro-Resets: Use Kelly’s “Adaptive” approach if you can’t get a full meal, find the best “micro-fuel” option available to keep your blood sugar steady.

Special thanks to Kelly Richards and Adaptive Warriors for their unwavering dedication to the well-being of the first responder community.
